Let's Talk Music!
Posted by steve | 31 May, 2008Here's the deal. For the longggggggggest time, we've been known as "Oldies 1510," and there's nothing wrong with filling the airwaves with the popular songs folks know and love, have grown up with, and formed many wonderful memories to! However, an Oldies format can also run the risk of becoming a tad tired over the long haul, and - - hey, who among us might not benefit from a nice freshening up from time to time?!
The conversation I'm interested in starting - - and the feedback I'm sincerely looking forward to receiving from you: our regular listeners -- involves your take on specifically identifying what music should be heard on WRNJ. As we work to freshen & expand the playlist, the tightrope we walk stretches across a divide separating our existing listeners from potential new ones. The ultimate goal, of course, is to both keep our existing listener base while attracting new listeners.
For myself, I view the "Playlist Project" (for lack of a snappier label) as an opportunity to accomplish two goals:
1). To update the music heard on WRNJ to include songs from the 80's and ...... dare I even suggest?.... the early 90's? (All kidding aside - - 1993 is still 15 years ago........would that not qualify in your mind as an "oldie?") and............
2). To expand the depth of the music currently being offered beyond the current Top 40 mindset, though still falling within the parameters of "pop music." For example: While WRNJ's library currently includes "You've Got a Friend" & "Fire & Rain" from James Taylor's classic "Sweet Baby James" LP, it does not acknowledge such beloved secondary hits as "Sunny Skies," "Blossom," and "Country Roads." Such oversights rob WRNJ listeners of the genuine depth of musical offerings they love and remember from decades past.
So - my question this week is this: What's YOUR take? Give it some thought & reply when you have a minute. For WRNJ to maximize its relevance in the community, it needs to reflect the tastes and preferences of its listenership. I'd hate to think that folks tune in just to grab a quick listen of local news, traffic & weather conditions! What's your take on the music & how best to update & expand what we play?
Let me know! I'll be reading & listening and talking about it on the air~
all my best,
Steve
